imarcproWorld Environment Day is celebrated annually on 5 June to promote awareness and action for environmental protection. Supported by governments, businesses, civil society organizations, and the United Nations, it serves as the world’s leading platform for environmental advocacy.

As we celebrate this important day, businesses must recognize their role in protecting the environment through sustainable practices, responsible operations, and transparent reporting.

Sustainability reporting in Nigeria is regulated by the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRC), which has adopted the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) frameworks, IFRS S1 and IFRS S2 as the national baseline for sustainability disclosures.

This development strengthens corporate transparency, climate accountability, and investor confidence by providing a standardized approach to reporting sustainability-related risks and opportunities.

Key Regulatory Frameworks are the IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards.

The FRC has adopted:
* IFRS S1 – General Requirements for Disclosure of Sustainability-related Financial Information.
* IFRS S2 – Climate-related Disclosures.

These standards provide the foundation for sustainability reporting in Nigeria.

NGX Sustainability Disclosure Guidelines
The Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) requires listed companies to disclose Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance as part of maintaining premium listing requirements.

Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)
Many organizations also align with the GRI Standards to provide broader stakeholder-focused sustainability disclosures beyond financial reporting requirements.

Phased Implementation Timeline
To support a smooth transition, the FRC has introduced a phased rollout:

Phase 1 – Early Adopters: Voluntary reporting from 2023

Phase 2 – Voluntary Adoption: 2024-2027: Public Interest Entities (PIEs) may voluntarily adopt the standards

Phase 3 – Mandatory Adoption: From 2028 – Mandatory reporting for all Public Interest Entities

Phase 4 – SMEs: Mandatory reporting expected from 2030

Four Core Reporting Areas
Organizations preparing sustainability reports should address the following pillars:

1. Governance
How sustainability-related risks and opportunities are governed, monitored, and managed.

2. Strategy
How sustainability issues affect the organization’s business model, strategy, and value creation over the short, medium, and long term.

3. Risk Management
Processes used to identify, assess, prioritize, and mitigate sustainability-related risks.

4. Metrics and Targets
Measurable performance indicators such as:
* Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions
* Energy consumption
* Water use
* Waste management
* Social impact metrics
* Sustainability targets and progress

Best Practices for Nigerian Businesses
To stay ahead of compliance requirements and strengthen stakeholder trust, organizations should:

* Integrate sustainability disclosures into annual reports.
* Position sustainability reporting as a clearly identifiable section immediately after the Directors’ Report.
* Develop internal systems for collecting ESG data.
* Establish measurable sustainability targets.
* Review official FRC guidance to understand applicable reporting timelines and obligations.
* Build sustainability into business strategy rather than treating reporting as a compliance exercise.

Final Thought
Sustainability reporting is no longer just a global trend—it is becoming a business requirement. Organizations that begin preparing today will be better positioned to meet future regulatory expectations, attract investment, manage risks, and create long-term value for stakeholders and society.
