The Amazing World of Architects and Architecture – Trends, Innovations, and Opportunities
Who is an Architect?
Overview: Architecture is more than just designing buildings; it’s about shaping the way people live, work, and interact with their environment. Architects play a key role in creating spaces that are not only functional but also beautiful, sustainable, and inspiring. I will start by sharing my journey into architecture, and discuss the factors that influenced my decision to become an architect.
My Background – Ijeoma Azi
As the Managing Partner at iMarc-Pro Architects, a Lagos-based firm that specializes in sustainable and innovative design solutions, I have over 21 years of experience in the building industry, spanning consulting, contract administration, and project management.
I have led my team at iMarc Projects in delivering competition-winning design projects, such as the adaptive reuse of a historic building into a modern office complex, the master planning of a mixed-use development, and the workplace design-refit of a multinational corporation. I am passionate about green building, adaptive reuse. I have a keen interest in leadership and business development, as well as life coaching and mentoring for women.
Childhood, Passion, Environment/Influence
My late uncle influenced me to study architecture. I admired his lifestyle and passion for creativity, which inspired me to pursue architecture. I excelled in subjects like Physics, Mathematics, Geography, and Technical Drawing—key admission requirements for architecture programs at the time.
Being one of the few women in a male-dominated course (with only 4 girls in my class of 30 students), I embraced the challenge and found great fulfillment in expressing my creativity through design. I spent six years studying what I loved, using my skills to solve problems and bring ideas to life.
What Architects Do …
Every building, home, or public space we see today began with an architect’s vision. Architects are problem-solvers who merge creativity with technical knowledge to design spaces that enhance human experiences. Their work goes beyond aesthetics; they ensure safety, efficiency, and sustainability in the built environment. This section explores the various types of projects architects work on and the responsibilities they carry from concept to completion.
Architects design and plan all kinds of buildings and spaces to make life better, safer, and more beautiful. Here are some of the things they create:
- Homes and Apartments
- Skyscrapers and Office Buildings
- Schools and Universities
- Hospitals and Health Centers
- Malls and Markets
- Stadiums and Arenas
- Parks and Public Spaces
- Museums and Theaters
- Hotels and Resorts
- Airports and Train Stations and Smart Cities
Architects do more than design; they supervise the construction process and lead the entire project team to ensure buildings and projects are completed as specified and on time.
